I have been paying for both Amazon Prime and Flipkart Plus at different points over the last few years, and I have a pretty clear opinion on when each one is worth it -- and when you are just throwing money away. Let me break it down properly instead of giving you one of those "both are great!" non-answers.
The Price Difference is Bigger Than You Think
Amazon Prime currently costs Rs. 1,499 per year (or Rs. 299 if you want to try it monthly, which I would not recommend -- the yearly plan is the only one that makes financial sense). There is also a quarterly plan at Rs. 599, but again, the math does not work out unless you are unsure and want to test the waters for three months.
Flipkart Plus, on the other hand, is technically free. You do not pay a subscription fee. Instead, you earn it by collecting Plus Coins through purchases on Flipkart. Every Rs. 200 you spend earns you one coin, and you need 50 coins to activate Plus membership for a year. So you need to spend roughly Rs. 10,000 on Flipkart in a year to qualify.
On the surface, Flipkart Plus looks like the obvious winner here. Free is free. But "free" has a catch -- you need to already be a regular Flipkart shopper to earn it, and if your spending drops off, you lose the status. Amazon just asks for money upfront and gives you everything immediately, no strings attached.
Delivery: Where Amazon Pulls Ahead
This is where Prime genuinely earns its keep. Prime members get free one-day and two-day delivery on millions of items, with no minimum order value. I have ordered a single Rs. 150 phone cable and had it at my door the next morning. That kind of convenience is hard to beat.
Flipkart Plus offers free delivery too, but the experience has been inconsistent in my usage. The "faster delivery" promise exists on paper, but in practice, especially outside tier-1 cities, the difference between Plus and regular delivery is not always noticeable. Flipkart's logistics have improved a lot, but Amazon's delivery network in India is still a step ahead for most pin codes.
One thing worth noting: if you mostly buy large items like appliances or furniture, the delivery benefit matters less because those typically take 3-5 days regardless of your membership status on either platform.
The Streaming Factor -- Prime's Secret Weapon
Here is where the comparison gets lopsided. Amazon Prime includes Prime Video at no extra cost. And Prime Video in India is genuinely excellent -- you get access to shows like Panchayat, Mirzapur, The Family Man, Citadel: Honey Bunny, plus a massive library of Bollywood and regional films. They have live cricket streaming for certain matches too. For a lot of people, Prime Video alone justifies the Rs. 1,499 annual fee, especially when standalone OTT subscriptions cost Rs. 500-1,000 per year anyway.
You also get Amazon Music and Prime Reading thrown in. The music app is decent for casual listeners (though it is no Spotify), and Prime Reading gives you access to a rotating selection of ebooks and magazines.
Flipkart Plus gives you... nothing in the entertainment department. No streaming, no music, no extras. It is purely a shopping membership. This is the single biggest gap between the two offerings, and Flipkart has not done anything meaningful to close it.
Sale Early Access and Deals
Both memberships give you early access to major sales, and this is genuinely useful if you are planning big purchases.
Amazon Prime members get 12-24 hours of early access before Great Indian Festival and other major sales. If you have ever tried to buy a popular phone or laptop on sale day, you know how fast things sell out. That head start can be the difference between snagging a deal and staring at an "out of stock" page.
Flipkart Plus members get similar early access to Big Billion Days and other Flipkart sales. In my experience, the early access window on Flipkart has been slightly more generous, sometimes starting 24 hours before the general sale opens.
Honestly, if you are the kind of person who plans purchases around sale events, both memberships deliver on this front. It is a tie.
Cashback and Rewards
Flipkart Plus gives you extra SuperCoins on every purchase, which you can redeem for discounts, partner offers, or even convert into Flipkart gift vouchers. The SuperCoin ecosystem is actually quite well-developed -- you can use coins for Ola rides, Myntra discounts, and a bunch of other partner redemptions. If you shop on Flipkart frequently, these coins add up surprisingly fast.
Amazon Prime does not have a direct coin or reward system tied to the membership. However, Prime members often get exclusive coupons and bank offers that regular users do not see. There are also Prime-exclusive product launches and Lightning Deals. The cashback through Amazon Pay and co-branded credit cards (like the ICICI Amazon Pay card) can be significant, but that is technically a separate thing from the Prime membership itself.
On pure rewards and cashback tied to the membership, Flipkart Plus edges ahead. The SuperCoin system gives you tangible, trackable returns on your spending.
Who Should Pick What
Go with Amazon Prime if:
- You want an OTT streaming service bundled in (this alone can justify the cost)
- You order frequently, including small items, and want reliable free next-day delivery
- You shop across many categories on Amazon
- You use Amazon Pay for bill payments and recharges
- You value the convenience of a paid-upfront model with no conditions
Go with Flipkart Plus if:
- You already spend Rs. 10,000 or more on Flipkart annually (you are essentially getting it for free)
- You are a heavy Flipkart shopper, especially for fashion, electronics, or groceries
- You like the SuperCoin rewards system and actually redeem those coins
- You do not care about streaming and just want shopping benefits
- You prefer not to pay for a membership outright
Get both if:
- You are a heavy online shopper who splits purchases between platforms depending on price and availability. A lot of us do this -- I check both Amazon and Flipkart before every purchase above Rs. 1,000, and having benefits on both sides means I always get the better deal without worrying about delivery charges eating into savings.
The Honest Verdict
If you are forcing me to pick just one, Amazon Prime wins for most people in India. The combination of reliable fast delivery, Prime Video, and Prime Music makes the Rs. 1,499 annual fee a genuinely good deal. You are getting a streaming service, a music app, and premium shopping benefits for about Rs. 125 a month.
But here is the thing -- Flipkart Plus does not cost you anything extra if you are already shopping there regularly. So the real question is not "which is better" but "do I shop on Flipkart enough to qualify for Plus?" If yes, activate it. It is free money on the table.
The people who get the most out of online shopping memberships in India are the ones who use them strategically. Compare prices on both platforms. Stack your bank offers with membership benefits. Time your big purchases around sale events where you have early access. That is where the real savings are -- not in blindly sticking to one platform.
